How does Minoxidil work?

Does Minoxidil Really Work?

Yes. Minoxidil is one of the few medications that has been clinically proven to treat androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). It has been used for several decades and remains one of the most widely studied treatments for hair loss worldwide.

Minoxidil was originally developed as a medicine for high blood pressure. During early clinical trials, doctors noticed that some patients experienced increased hair growth. This observation eventually led to the development of topical minoxidil solutions designed specifically for the scalp.

Today, minoxidil is considered a first-line treatment for pattern hair loss in both men and women.

Evidence from clinical studies

Clinical studies and real-world data consistently show that minoxidil can improve hair density and slow further hair loss in a large proportion of users.

• Response rates: Studies of topical minoxidil show measurable improvement in hair growth or hair density in many patients, with real-world outcomes suggesting that around 80% of users experience some benefit depending on factors such as age, genetics, and stage of hair loss.

• Time frame: Hair growth takes time. Most patients need 3–6 months of consistent use before noticing any changes. For some individuals, visible thickening may take 6–12 months.

• Ongoing treatment: Minoxidil does not cure baldness. It works only while it is being used. If treatment is stopped, any benefits gradually reverse.

Men and women

Minoxidil can be used by both men and women experiencing pattern hair loss. At LEO, our topical formulations use a 6% minoxidil solution in an alcohol-free base designed to support scalp comfort during long-term use.

Factors that influence results

Several factors affect how well minoxidil works.

Stage of hair loss

Minoxidil tends to work best when hair loss is in its earlier stages, when follicles are still active.

Consistency

Consistency is essential. Skipping applications reduces effectiveness. Applying the treatment once daily as prescribedgives the best chance of improvement.

Delivery to the scalp

Minoxidil must reach the scalp to work. If the solution sits on the hair instead of the skin, less medication reaches the follicles.

This is why LEO provides precision applicators, including the dropper, targeted spray, and the LEO Scalp Roller, which is designed to apply the solution directly to the scalp with minimal waste.

Individual biology

Genetics, hormone levels, overall health and other medications can all influence how well someone responds to treatment.

LEO formulations

LEO provides a 6% topical minoxidil solution formulated in an alcohol-free base called TrichoSol. This natural, oil-based delivery system is designed to be gentler on the scalp than traditional alcohol-heavy formulations.

Our formulations may also include azelaic acid and/or a low dose of finasteride when clinically appropriate.

All orders include precision applicators — a dropper and targeted spray — and many six-month plans include the LEO Scalp Roller, which helps deliver the solution directly onto the scalp.

Summary

Minoxidil is one of the most well-established treatments for pattern hair loss. Many people experience stabilisation of hair loss and gradual thickening when the treatment is used consistently. However, results vary from person to person and require patience.

Most patients need 3–6 months to see early changes and up to 12 months for fuller results. If treatment is stopped, any benefits gradually fade.

If you have questions about whether minoxidil is right for you, our prescriber can review your consultation and advise on the most appropriate treatment plan.
