Minoxidil is one of only two medications that have been clinically proven to treat androgenetic alopecia. It was first used as a blood-pressure medicine and later formulated for topical application to the scalp. Decades of studies and real-world use show that minoxidil can slow or stop further hair loss and promote regrowth in many patients.
Evidence from clinical studies
• Success rates: Published studies report that topical minoxidil improves hair density and hair count in around 40–60% of users. Results vary depending on the stage of hair loss, age, genetics and adherence to treatment.
• Time frame: It usually takes 3–6 months of consistent daily use before any improvement is noticeable. For some patients, visible thickening may take 6–12 months. Minoxidil does not cure baldness; it works only while you continue treatment.
• Men and women: Minoxidil is effective for both men and women. LEO offers a 6% solution formulated in a natural, alcohol-free base.
Factors that influence results
• Stage of hair loss: Minoxidil works best when hair loss is in its early stages and hair follicles are still active.
• Consistent use: Skipping applications reduces effectiveness. Applying the solution once daily as prescribed is essential for optimal results.
• Delivery method: Minoxidil needs to reach the scalp to work. Using precision applicators — like the dropper, targeted spray or the LEO Scalp Roller — ensures the solution is delivered to the scalp rather than wasted on hair.
• Underlying health: Overall health, hormone levels and concomitant medications can affect response. Our prescriber will determine if minoxidil is appropriate for you.
LEO formulations
LEO provides a 6% topical minoxidil solution in an alcohol-free, natural base called TrichoSol. This base is derived from plant oils such as lavender, rosemary and juniper, which help keep the scalp comfortable during long-term use. Our minoxidil may be combined with azelaic acid and/or a low dose of finasteride when clinically appropriate.
All orders include precision applicators – a dropper and targeted spray – and many six-month plans include the LEO Scalp Roller. The Scalp Roller applies the solution directly onto the scalp with zero mess or waste.
Summary
Minoxidil really does work for many people with pattern hair loss, but it is not a miracle cure. It must be used consistently, and results depend on individual factors. Improvements are gradual; stabilisation can take 3–6 months and visible thickening up to 12 months. If you stop using minoxidil, any benefits will gradually reverse. Speak to our prescriber if you have questions about whether minoxidil is right for you.
